The book contains 366 pages, 113 figures, 18 tables and a map of the Lower Danube. The historical period under discussion is from 29 B.C. to A.D. 602. The studied area is the 471 km long strip of land, which stretches along the right bank of the Danube river within the boundaries of modern Bulgaria.
The book consists of six chapters. Part One of Chapter I comments on the campaign of M. Licinius Crassus in 29/28 B.C. and of those of other military commanders in later time, which lead to the constitution of the Roman provinces of Moesia and Thracia. The later administrative organization of the region is also discussed: the division of Moesia into two parts (Upper and Lower Moesia and the creation of the late Roman provinces of Dacia Ripensis and Moesia Secunda. Part Two of Chapter I debates on problems concerning the localization, etymology and written sources about 45 settlements of different statute situated on the right river bank. Part Three of the same chapter contains a study on historical maps from the 15th-18th century, in which the Balkan Peninsula and the course of the Lower Danube during the Principate and the Later Antiquity are represented.
Chapter II is focussed on the military affairs in the Lower Danube region during the 1st - 6th century A.D.: Roman and late Roman military organization; history, structure and dislocation of the legions and auxiliary units stationed there; military campaigns and barbarian incursions into the region; archaeological evidence about the discussed problems (stratigraphy of the sites; numismatic material; military stamps on bricks and tiles; other finds etc.).
Chapter III contains a discussion on the topography and size of the known so far settlements of different statute, situated along the right Danube bank within the boundaries of modern Bulgaria. A definition and general characterization of the main building periods of the fortifications during the Principate and the Later Antiquity is offered: the building activities of Augustus; Trajan and Hadrian; Aurelian and Probus; Diocletian, Constantine the Great and his sons, Valens; the period after the Gothic invasions in A.D. 376; Anastasius and Justinian I.
Chapter IV comments on the planning of military camps. Special attention is paid to the legionary fortress Novae (near Svishtov) during the Principate. The best studied late antique castellum in the region is Iatrus (by the village of Krivina, Rousse district).
Chapter V is specially devoted to the problem of "castra-canabae-vicus" and their territories. The discussion is concentrated on the legionary camps at Ratiaria, Oescus, Novae and Durostorum.
The last Chapter VI concerns the road running along the right Danube bank, whose construction started in the reign of Emperor Tiberius, as well as the remains of bridges across the river and harbours discovered so far.
